The was a warm Spring evening
this May 3rd and a happy crowd gathered at Symphony Space for a night of short
comedy films.

Co-host Victor Varnado began
the evening with a dramatic reading of the New Yorker’s pompous review of The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and then we
introduced our guest judges: the team of Steve Rosenthal and Peggy O’Brien.
They’re a team because the work together, but also because they’re married.
Peggy is a writer and comedian and Steve is an editor.

Steve showed us a “leaked”

While our audience

Next up was Knights of the Long Table, written by
Andrew Burlinson and Scott Kruse, directed by Andrew Burlinson. This movie,
from LA, tells an age-old origin story in unexpected ways. Next we showed Woman Who Hates Plants by New York

written by Julian Lucas and Jack White, and directed by Julian Lucas. This
movie tells the story about a man who employs the ultimate excuse to get out of
work and pays the price. Co-writer and co-star Jack White was in town from
Australia for a wedding, and his entire rowdy family was in attendance. Jack
talked about how the film came about and his plans for more.

Our final film in the line up
was Keith Bearden’s How to Get Rich in 13 East Steps, a unique, borderline surreal short shot in beautiful black

stage to announce the Judges and Audience favorites – both went to Granny Smith. It was a tough competition
with a split judges’ vote, but in the end, this scrappy movie from Australia
carried the day.

Hosts Jay Stern and Victor Varnado's guest judge for the evening was filmmaker and video artist Joan Grossman.

Victor and Jay greet the Iron Mule audience.

Joan talked with Jay and Victor about what she likes in short comedy films (being funny and having a strong story helps) and what she doesn't like (a slow lead up to just one joke).

Then it was time for the films. Our first movie of the evening did have a slow build-up, but concluded with a series of jokes, each one building on the last. Shot in a creepy CSI style, Jean-Pierre Michael's Impact, our entry from France, was a classy way to begin the evening. It was followed by a West Coast film, Damien Patrick's Directors on Directing, in which, through a series of profound interviews, three movie directors reveal what they have discovered to be the real power of filmmaking.

Our second block of films began with Sam Frazier, Jr.'s documentary, The Ghost Pepper Eating Contest of Jefferson County. We've shown a few films by Sam before, and this one was just as good as the others, documenting a competition in which people perform the stupid act of seeing how many ghost peppers they can eat before their body shuts down.

Next was a film by another returning filmmaker: Perry Strong was back with his movie The Stick, a slickly-shot film about a very poorly executed caper. Perry was there to talk about his film afterwards, and we discussed his choice to shoot this very funny movie like a thriller.

Actor/writer/director Perry Strong talks to an adoring audience.

Out last film in competition was the epic Down in Flames: the True Story of Tony "Volcano" Valenci directed by William Stribling, and written by him and R.J. Lewis. This movie, featuring real Guinness World Record holders and performers Todd Robbins, The Great Throwdini, and Richie Magic, tells the story of a fire eater who decides his greatest stunt will be becoming the first person to blow fire while skydiving. Needless to say, his amazing journey is fraught with risks and challenges. Producer / writer R.J. Lewis was at the screening, along with actors Sarah Blaze and Richie Magic. We talked to them about their work on this ambitious film, which straddles reality and fiction in some interesting ways.
Closing out the night were not one, but two "Wanna Be a Star" movies, featuring audience members from previous shows who won a chance to star in their own movie. This time, Jay and Victor each made a movie, both starring the same two ladies, and both starting with the same two lines of dialogue. First up was Jay's Velociraptors in Heat starring audience member Hannah Stone, and then Victor presented Salmonella, starring Trilby Schreiber. The ladies came on stage for an interview and seemed delighted with their appearance on the big screen.
Sam talked about judging each work of comedy on its own terms and to determine if it successfully achieves what it tries to do. Of course with a "best of" her job of judging a favorite film was going to be extra hard, since all of the films in the lineup were quite successful.

There were many international submissions in 2014 with a quite few from Australia, two of which made to the top ten list. The first one of the evening was Craig Melville's THE POLYGAMIST, a funny story about a woman's life juggling three men. Next up was David Foster and Donald Russell's YOU GOOD!, a humorous twist of drug dealers working as doctors on the streets. Comedian Perry Strong also features in the film and co-produced. He was there to talk about the film, his work, and how to successfully get away with using the "n-word" in comedy.

We went back to Australia with Nick Hunter and Seaton Kay-Smith's FLOAT, a long-standing favorite about a man disturbed by meeting his ex-girlfriend's new beau at a party. Director Pamela Wess presented her film, ON WOMEN WHO VALIDATE THEMSELVES THROUGH SEX, about one woman's angst in not getting enough attention from men as her friend lays spread-eagle on the ground, casually drawing in every guy walking by.

Then came SPOONERS, in which writer/director Bryan Horch playfully exposes how a man struggles to buy a mattress for him and his husband without having to make a big deal out of it. First, Chris Capel's LIVING WITH JIGSAW starred a scary but very funny puppet playing twisted games. Last month's judge's award winner, HIGHWAY OF HELL by Andy and Carolyn London, returned for an encore performance of this unique charcoal on paper animation about the "beauty" of Clam Cove, Long Island. Next was Natalie Labarre's PAPA, a sweet father/daughter story where dad tries his best at being a good dad, despite the obstacles. Finally, Jason Coates' creative DICTIONARY MODELS, about a dictionary-model duo, capped the "Best of" list for 2014.

There are many holiday traditions which people follow around this time and at the Iron Mule there's no exception! We started as we have every December, since 2003, with the entertaining WHITE BLOOD CELL SAVES CHRISTMAS by Tate English and Dano Johnson. This animated film about a white blood cell taking over for an ailing Santa is an annual holiday classic of choice.

WHY I MAKE MOVIES by Sam Frazier, Jr. was the first film in competition and it presented to us the life of a filmmaker -- not about creating the art of film, but about the parties and the people you'll meet once the film gets into festivals. Frazier's witty slide projector style film gave an honest rundown of this glamorous festival lifestyle.

The next short was an animated piece by Jason Petrovich titled JIM MORRISON'S BIG COMEBACK. Playing on the hoax of the singer's death, Morrison is seen live and well as a ventriloquist for his puppet Mojo Risin.

The international part of the competition came from Karen Di Porto of Rome with her short called CAESAR. Shot around the surroundings of the Coliseum, the story focuses on a man's economic troubles who tries to make a living by taking photos with tourists dressed as a centurion. Ironically, his name is Caesar and we explore his modern day battle in the Italian tourism marketplace.

HANKY PANKY is a quirky short about a napkin expert set up on a blind date. Unaware and disinterested of his "date" at a friend's dinner, his love for napkins began to shine once the date's special vintage handkerchief enters and adds some sizzle. Hanky panky ensues between the animated napkins and possibly through their respective owners. Written by Nick Roth and Toby Bryan, directed by Lindsey Haun.

Asher Muldoon is the festival's youngest writer/director to have a short screened at the Iron Mule. screened His GOODNIGHT JEEVES was creatively done with minimal time, cast, and space. The film presented his offbeat take of a man's relationship with his butler inspired by Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie's Jeeves and Wooster.

Geoffrey Plitt's THE HERO SUPER brought light to a different kind of superhero, a kind which doesn't get too much credit. In an effort to save his building from being demolished due to crime in the area, its very dedicated and handy superintendent makes himself into a superhero, complete with wrench nun-chucks and key-chain brass knuckles. It has all the suspense of a superhero film with a comedic twist.

Our last film in competition, HIGHWAY OF HELL, invites us to visit a peculiar town called Clam Cove on Long Island, expressed through a man's frightening but fascinating story of his youth there. The dark feel of the story was heightened by its animation done with charcoal on paper, creatively executed by Andy and Carolyn London.

Our special guest judge Mike Maronna (Big Pete from The Adventures of Pete and Pete) was an excellent addition as hosts Jay and Victor took us through this GREAT lineup of films from around the world featuring a web series, zombies, late night horror hosts and wheelchair-bound bank robbers.

Our QnAs included a chat with Ryan Decker and Garrett Johnston, the writers/directors of Man With a Van, a web series about movers in New York.
We then invited brothers Kyle and Levi McCachen, writer and director resp. of Disabled and Dangerous, a Canadian heist comedy about three friends with ALS who are driven to desperate measures.

The night's Judges' Award went to Brains? by Giles McNeil and Paul Stephanus, a fantastic comedy about zombies in New Zealand who are terrorized by the unstoppable threat.... of humans!
Our Audience's Award was won by Disabled and Dangerous.

We closed the night, once again, with our Wanna Be a Star? film, which pairs one lucky audience member with a local filmmaker to create a short film based on an audience-generated title. This month's film was a horror flick, Chop House. It was written and directed by Iron Mule co-founder Victor Varnado, and starred audience member Natalie Shutler.

Come on over to Symphony Space on Sunday November 3rd at 7:30pm for silent comedies from Denmark, an out-of-work super sidekick, our next Wanna Be A Star? film So I Married a Canadian, and more!

The Iron Mule Film Festivalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13260185868415169866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4015986223051664294.post-40543307424333122172013-09-09T13:44:00.000-04:002013-09-09T13:44:48.181-04:00Notes From Our September 8th ShowThe Iron Mule returned to Symphony Space for a night of great shorts. We began with a film about love... Italian style. "L'Appuntamento" by co-writer/director/star Gianpiero Alicchio shows the intricacies and duplicity of dating complete with overpriced vegan dinners and unforeseen second dates.

Next we showed a few films from LA-based sketch comedy troop, Kill Bosby. Check them out HERE.

Our audience award went to Kevin Maher & William Scurry's film, "King Kong Deleted Scenes." Scurry was in attendance for a QnA and to show off his sweet bow tie. Watch this long-lost conversation from the voyage back from Skull Island HERE.

The judges' award went to "Garden of Steven" from Chris Keener and Robert Shore. Producer Nick Fitzhugh joined us for a QnA. Check out the trailer for this excellent, Guatemala-set film about a hapless missionary and his encounter with the saint of sinners and drunks, Maximon HERE.

Once again, we closed the night with our Wanna Be a Star? film, a series of films that pairs one or more lucky audience members with a director and an audience-submitted title to create something that will be screened at the following month's show. This month it was "Chartreuse Pantograph" directed by Iron Mule producer, Ryan Decker. The audience members participated in a fake audition for a terrible space opera about an inter-sex alien parasite who is trying to reunite the galaxy after a universe-wide war. The audience members included Kate Britton, Zak Kaplan, Garrett Johnston and Tim Hoobler.

Head to Symphony Space on Sunday October 6th for the next installment in the series, "Chop House" directed by the Iron Mule's co-founder Victor Varnado, a Halloween-themed lineup of films, and a very special guest judge!
MOVIN ON UP!

The Iron Mule just had its first show at Symphony Space, and how sweet it was. We had a great turnout and showed some damn-good films.

We even had a famous documentarian as our guest judge; Phillip Shane (BEING ELMO, and the upcoming DANCING IN JAFFA).

We kicked off the evening with HICCUP by Derville Quigley which was a surreal piece about the things that lie within and outside of our control... And bouncy castles, of course.
Then from Byron Brown and the guys at HUMORDY we showed MY COOLEST FRIEND. There's a lot of fun to be had when you combine a porche, an electric dog collar and John Merriman in a wig.

From Tim Blackburn and Lyndal Moody we showed MONOBROW, a hilarious short about a girl who's met the perfect guy, except.... He has a giant unibrow. Follow the link to see, it's Iron Mule approved after taking home our Audience Award!

Next we screened the first installment of the upcoming webseries, MAN WITH A VAN, a series about the misadventures of movers in New York. It's funny AND it's written and directed by one of Iron Mule's producers and local man with a van, Ryan Decker.

From Mitch Rouse we showed MERKIN PENAL, a prison comedy with more rape jokes than you could shake a shank at.

Jeff Seal came by to share a drunken conversation he'd recently had with his drunken 15 year old self called... A (DRUNKEN) CONVERSATION WITH MY 15 YEAR OLD SELF.

Then from Periods Films we saw BIG CITY, BRIGHT LIGHTS which was a great, five minute, first-person POV version of the novel/Michael J Fox movie.

Our Judges Award went to I'LL BE HERE ALL NIGHT by Andrew Parkhill, which featured a beleaguered pub singer and the deranged old man who just wouldn't let him finish his set.

We then ended our night with our monthly WANNA BE A STAR? movie which pairs one lucky audience member with an Iron Mule filmmaker to make a short to screen at the following month's show. This time around it was GRANDPA'S CANDY written & directed by Iron Mule hosts Jay Stern and Victor Varnado and starring audience member Brad Brownson. Check it out!

We will be back at Symphony Space on August 4th for the next installment of the Iron Mule. See you there! The Iron Mule Film Festivalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13260185868415169866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4015986223051664294.post-21421958130873737472013-06-13T20:03:00.003-04:002013-06-13T20:03:58.448-04:00Acclaimed Director, Editor, and Producer Phillip Shane to Guest Judge July 7 Iron MuleWe wanted to kick off our first show at Symphony Space with a bang, so we booked a high-caliber guest judge: old friend of the Iron Mule, Phillip Shane. Here's some info about Phillip.

Philip Shane is an award winning documentary producer,
director and editor with over 25 years experience. Some of his most recent
films include DANCING IN JAFFA (Editor; 2013 TriBeCa Film Festival World
Premiere, and Winner of the Best Editor award at the DocAviv Festival in
Israel), BEING ELMO (Co-Director, 2010 Sundance Film Festival World Premiere
& Winner of the Special Jury Prize for Documentary), and the acclaimed
biography EINSTEIN (Producer/Director, 2008, History Channel).

For more than ten years he was an editor with ABC News on many distinguished
documentaries, including TIP OF THE SPEAR (2004, DuPont Columbia Award for
Distinguished Broadcasting) and MARTIN LUTHER KING (2000, Emmy Award for
Outstanding Historical Program). A short film he made with Peter Jennings and
Senior Producer Richard Gerdau, WITNESS TO HISTORY, which explored Jenning's
personal memories of 9/11, was entered into the permanent collection of
American History at the Smithsonian Institution.

But, holy moly, documentaries can be depressing, so he also loves comedy. As a
student, performer and director at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater for
over 12 years, he was a founding member of the pioneering LECHE MAGICA short
comedy film festival, and he and Rob Huebel (of "Human Giant")
created, directed and starred in FILET O' FILM, a short film & live comedy
show which ran for many years at the UCB Theaters in New York and Los Angeles.
He has made many short comedy films (which you can find on YouTube and Funny Or
Die if you look hard enough) which are all pretty funny, and just a little bit
sad… but mostly funny.

It was a fond farewell featuring some great films and it was even hosted the now former film programmer 92Y TriBeCa, our friend Cristina Cacioppo.
We kicked the night off with Cristina's Wanna Be A Star film, SLEDGE, an old favorite of the Mule's.

We then showed BREAKFAST SURPRISE by Chris Capel, a bloody/ puke-filled film about breakfast and Jenga. There were as many screams in the audience as there were laughs.

That was followed by another installment in the J. CREW CREW series about the adventures of models and friends. Writer/ Director Meghan O'Neill came to talk about this and other pieces based on magazines lying around her apartment.

A rare, midwestern appearance was made by Zach Yokum's SPRING FORWARD. A very punctual father rushes to get his family to church on time after daylight savings, and all in one Steadicam shot! Next up was another episode of SERIOUS BUSINESS (we also screened one at our May show) from Ballard Boyd.

We then showed a couple of man-on-the-street videos from Kevin Maher, WHO'S MORE RACIST? COMIC CON EDITION and 2+2=5. Hilarity and ill-informed judgements ensue.

From french filmmakers, Laurence Arcadias and Juliette Marchand, came a fantastic stop-animation video about a couple trying to rekindle their lackluster love life called TEMPEST IN A BEDROOM. It took home BOTH our Audience's and Judges' Awards. Co-director, Laurence Arcadia was in attendance to accept.

Next we screened DINNER WITH HOLLY from Joel Crockett and Daniel Sinclair, a great film about a young couple who invite their more adventurous friend, Holly, over for dinner and a chance to spice up their sex life.

Our Wanna Be A Star video this month, NEVERMIND, was written and directed by host Victor Varnado and starred audience member Sharon Alkalay.

Before the lights came up one last time for us at 92YTriBeca, we had a cerimonial handing off of the official hard drive from Cristina to Aishah at our new home, Symphony Space.
Our May show kicked off with a brief chat with our guest judge, screenwriter and producer George Strayton (credits include XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS). We then showed Joe Lipari's DREAM JOB, a film about a down-on-his-luck filmmaker who gets the chance of a lifetime, to shoot a film for who he thinks is George Lucas. The film also features a cameo from the Iron Mule's Victor Varnado as none other than "Mr. Lucas."

We then screened an episode of Meghan O'Neil's J. CREW CREW, a web series about models... who are friends... and go on adventures... and wear J. Crew. It's great, and not just coz we said so; it took home our audience's choice award! Check it out HERE.

Next up was a very informative video from David Ward called HOW TO TIE A DOUBLE WINDSOR ON CRACK. Need we say more? Then a great, silent comedy from Ben Model and Jeff Seal, IT LOOKS LIKE RAIN. This was Ben and Jeff's second time at the Iron Mule, we screened another silent film from them a few months back, A DAY'S MESSING.

From Steve Collins we saw MARKELSON'S SYNDROME, a story of new love, a rare disease and goulash.

The Judges award went to POCKETS by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, a hilarious short about a robbery that goes horribly wrong and involves lots and lots of pockets.

Next we screened an episode of SERIOUS BUSINESS by Ballard Boyd, and had a QnA with the series' co-writer and star, Rob Asaro.

And finally we closed with our Wanna Be A Star? film (a monthly series that pairs one lucky audience member with one of the festival's filmmakers to make a short). This month's film was a great comedy about a puppet sub-letter who loves to party named SASSAFRAS BEANBAG, directed by Ryan Arey and starring audience member Chiara Zaccheo.

As programming is winding-down at 92Y TriBeCa, this was our second to last show at this venue. For our final show at the space, our announcement of our new home, and a new episode of J. CREW CREW, come on down to 92Y TriBeCa (200 Hudson St.) on June 1st for the next Iron Mule!
home of Iron Mule, will be closing this June.

92YTribeca was an atypical place; subsidized by the uptown
92Y, it was tucked away on an otherwise desolate stretch of Hudson Street
between traffic entryways to the Holland Tunnel. But they had a
state-of-the-art screening room, with a robust, exciting, and always surprising
film program.

Before our time at 92YTribeca, the Iron Mule screened for
many years at the dearly beloved Pioneer Theater in the East Village.
92YTribeca was just opening when that theater went under, and the fledgling
institution offered us a new home. We were proud to hold one of the first
screenings at 92YTribeca. And over the years, members of the Iron Mule community have
shown all sorts of work there outside of our monthly screenings.

The film programmer, Cristina Cacioppo, has been a great
friend to us. She fought for the best screening equipment for our filmmakers
and she allowed us to program the occasional feature comedy films, which she
procured on 35mm prints.

Cristina’s unique vision mixing good and
so-bad-it’s-unbelievably-good cinema along with a dedication to amplifying the
live experience of a theatrical film screening was a perfect match for what we
strive for at the Iron Mule. She was an advocate for independent voices and all
kinds of cinema, high and low. There has been and is no other programming line
up just like Cristina’s. The closest cognate is the type of programming you get
at the Alamo Drafthouse (outside of NYC, but moving here in 2014 – they could
do no better than to hire Cristina immediately).

The people at the 92nd Street Y, which is a revered and
powerful cultural institution, stated in their press release that “a second,
physical location is not critical to our mission,” which discounts the
thousands of filmmakers and scores of independent filmmakers who have relied on
92YTribeca for a unique film-going experience, and often the only opportunity
to see rare and classic films on the big screen. We presented a screening of Olsen and Johnson’s
Crazy House there in a 35mm print – we bet that will not happen again in a NYC theater for
the next decade, if not longer.

As the New Yorker critic Richard Brody points out in his
article “Save 92YTribeca,” 92YTribeca has made itself critical to NYC
moviegoers and deserves saving. But whether such saving will happen is extremely
doubtful. So we bid a fond farewell to 92YTribeca. There will be nothing quite
like you. And here’s to the years of fantastic work by Cristina Cacioppo, and her singular programming vision. We can’t wait to see what she does
next.

The Iron Mule returned to 92Y TriBeCa for another sold-out show. The night began with a performance by our guest judge, Audrey Crabtree. Hosts Jay Stern and Kevin Maher (playing the role of Victor Varnado) then kicked off the film program with an entry from Austin, Texas, THE PROSTITUTE by Byron Brown, which took home our judges award. The film featured a male street walker with a wide array of costumes to choose from, including "karate Patrick Ewing."

We then played TUG , a hilarious film that explores the gray area between a bromance and a romance. The director/ star of the film, J Marvin Solomon, came all the way from LA to participate in a Q&A.

Also from Austin we showed a couple of films from one of the Iron Mule's favorite filmmakers, Steve Collins: THE BALLAD OF COURTNEY & JAMES and J.P.B.F. He too attended for a Q&A where he discussed his many short comedies and his critically-acclaimed dramatic features.

Heading back north we showed a film from New York-based, brother filmmakers Conor & Tyler Byrne. Just to prove how incestual the film industry is, these rising stars at the Iron Mule were actually students of Steve Collins' at Wesleyan University. Their film HEADBANGER was a fantastic short about a mother and son learning to rock together. This was the second film by the brothers Byrne to be screened at the Iron Mule and the entire Byrne clan was in attendance, including their mother who co-starred in the film.

From Todd Alcott we screened an absurd and funny dissection of a Beatles song, SHE LOVES YOU: A CLOSER LOOK. Click to unveil answers to the burning questions of who the "she" and "you" are in this pop gem.

Our audience award went to the improvised, guerilla, iPhone-shot PANHANDLER PARTY by Gary Lee Mahmoud and Josh Apter. The film featured a train filled with a circus performer, a lawyer, a WASPy couple, an undercover cop, and more all asking if you can spare some change. Click to join the party.

We then closed the night with our Wanna Be A Star? film (a monthly contest that puts one lucky audience member in front of the camera). This month's film was BRASS PARSNIP which was directed by Evan Cummings and starring audience member, Marissa Mancini.

The February Iron Mule was a good time had by all. Jay and Victor kicked off the evening with updates on their upcoming feature films "The Realm of LARP" and "The Adventures of Paul and Marian. "Our guest judge, Michael Kupperman, gave a great, illustrated presentation featuring excerpts from his new book "Tales Designed To Thrizzle Vol 2."

The film program began with an entry from our friends at iThentic.com, "Money Shot" featuring the misadventures of an Ebay-er with a presumably magic camera that has the power to duplicate whatever it shoots.

Next we showed a hilarious and expertly shot film from Spain called "Division Azul" by Sergi Marti. In order to conquer Lenigrad, Hitler orders two Spanish soldiers to parachute behind enemy lines, but the plan backfires when their chutes get stuck in the trees.

From Peter Alton we screened "And When He Died All He Left Us Was Alone"a film about two sisters forced to compete for their late father's inheritance... With a fight to the death.

The Audience choice Award went to Josh & Jason Diamond's "Nana," featuring a steamy moment of lucidity from a seemingly senile granny as she reflects upon a V Day gangbang.

Our Judge's award went to "A Day's Messing" directed by and starring Jeff Seal. It was a hilarious, silent comedy featuring a Buster Keaton-esque bike messenger doing his best to deliver his "triple rush" package and get the girl (Carlen Altman cameo alert) while fighting off commuters, cabbies and a gypsy sorceress.

We finished the night with our monthly series, "Wanna Be A Star?" which features one lucky member of last month's audience and a title by the first person to scream a suggestion. This month's edition was directed by Mary Beth Coudal and starring Michael Martin and Jay Fortunato called "Spork Wars." A traveling salesman stops into a diner to share with the owner his latest invention and a secret that ties the two men together in a bond as unbreakable as spoon and fork in this funny tale revolving around the spork. The Iron Mule Film Festivalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13260185868415169866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4015986223051664294.post-67215828016538036162013-01-06T22:30:00.000-05:002013-01-06T22:30:46.989-05:00January's ShowHappy New Year! We kicked off 2013 with a great show featuring new films by some Iron Mule favorites and a few new faces.

The night began with a film from our friends at iThentic.com. A hapless boyfriend struggles to listen to his girlfriend and not ogle a bar filled with porn stars in "An Evening With Mike & Jessica at the King's Head Inn," directed by David Tamkin.

Next we showed a fantastic, stop-motion film about a man coming to a nudist colony to care for his dying mother, along with a bunch of other surrealistic stuff. Everybody loved it! ("Oh Willy..." by Emma de Swaef and Marc James Roels)

From Erich Eilenberger came "Stockholm," the story of a radical freegan who kidnaps a vapid, LA celebutante in order to brainwash her to join his cause, but it all goes sour over steak and cake.

Then from Australia, we showed Burleigh Smith's "Thing My Father Never Taught Me," a sweet film about a father imparting a little wisdom about the fairer sex to his three-year old son.

Kevin Maher shared his new web series, "Andrew 12-Sided Dice Clay," which featured the fanboy comedian's routines about sex, droids and hobbits. A must-see for all fans of stand-up and cylons.

Our judge's award went to Eric Hendricks for his found-footage tale of a ship lost at sea ("Sirens of the Past"). And Ryan Arey's story of a man who's GPS knows a more than just how to get home took the audience's choice award ("What Drugs Are You Looking For?")

We closed the night with Victor Varnado's Wanna Be a Star? video, "Alan Ladd Syndrome,"starring Mary Beth Coudal doing her best to save her boyfriend from the symptoms of this horrific, under-publicized condition. The Iron Mule Film Festivalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13260185868415169866noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4015986223051664294.post-45111887375688031592012-12-03T22:54:00.000-05:002012-12-04T20:36:12.076-05:00Notes from our December 1st ScreeningAfter being rained-out by Superstorm Sandy, the Iron Mule bounced-back better than ever with a strong lineup from some of our favorite filmmakers.

The evening kicked-off with a presentation on paint toxicity that was as informative as it was funny by Kriota Willberg. Then we screened the Iron Mule classic, WHITE BLOOD CELL SAVES CHRISTMAS by Dano Johnson & Tate English. This holiday favorite features a giant white blood cell that takes over for Santa when he's too sick to deliver gifts to all the good girls & boys.

Next we showed THE LOST TRIBES OF NEW YORK CITY by Andy & Carolyn London featuring some great interviews with some of the often overlooked residents of NYC, like phone booths and manholes...

Then we took a trip to Norway for a good old fashion mother-son suicide pact, subtle hilarity ensues, DIN TUR by Vegard Dahle. Keeping with the theme we then watched the campaign spoof, POLITICAL SUICIDE by Kevin Maher & Bill Scurry.

Next we showed some hilarious, single-take videos featuring heavy metal and cut-out puppets from musician/ filmmaker, Watt White (I WANT TO BE A FASHION BLOGGER and THE BATTLE AT IKEA).

Then we showed a film about a cranky, old couple who, after falling and not being able to get up, are forced to spend a night together on their front yard, TWO OLD NUTS by Spencer Lenzie.
From Iron Mule's vaults we brought back Ryan Arey & David Valentine's FLORIDA?, and their latest, FLORIDA? 2, featuring a cute, green puppet, his dead father and their harrowing journey across the sea.

We ended the night with the WANNA BE A STAR? film, INVINCIBLE ANTICHRIST VICTORY by Jay Stern and featuring audience member/ actor, Joanna Parson.

We will return to 92Y TriBeca on Saturday January 5th for the next installment of the Iron Mule. See you there!
We began with a film from our friends at iThentic.com, a funny short about a new student confronting the unnavigable social strata of high school called Everything You Always Wanted To Know About High School... Next we showed a great animated piece by Michelle Brost about a lumberjack who has a passion for knitting, Leonard.

The latest from Periods was a hit, an hilarious retelling of John Steinbeck's classic East of Eden *Full disclosure, none of us -- no, not even the guys at Periods-- has read it, we've only seen the film starring James Dean. But it was still hilarious and had more dick jokes than you could shake a stick at. Next, repeating Iron Mule offenders Ben and Chris Blaine had their new film What Time Do You Call This? featuring a drunken Brit wooing his disgruntled girlfriend with a little dirty dancing.

We then changed gears and screened an excellent stop-motion piece called Cowboy, Clone, Dust by Matt Christensen. It was a very imaginative and unassumingly profound film... Or at least our guest judge, best-selling author Myla Goldberg, thought so! But seriously, Matt's film was a highlight for all of us at Iron Mule.

Next we showed The Shuffle by Robert Nguyen, a film about a guy who can't muster-up enough courage to talk to the girl of his dreams, so he does what any normal, tax-paying everydude would do... He stalks her and has his friend steal her yoga mat. Hilarity ensues.

Before all the votes were counted we showed our latest Wanna Be a Star? film starring audience member Joshua Breeze. The title, selected by the audience at the August edition of Iron Mule, was In the Arms of the Angel and was directed by and co-starring Iron Mule newb, Ryan Decker. Moral of that story: don't buy dogs while intoxicated. Just don't. It's a uniquely terrible idea.

After all the ballots were counted and the judges conferred with the inimitable Ms. Goldberg the victors of the October screening series were Cowboy, Clone Dust giving Matt Christensen the audience award and Giovanni Autran of Periods took home the judges' award for East of Eden.

All in all it was a great night filled with great films and side-splitting humor. Come on down to 92YTriBeCa on November 3rd for the next installment in the Iron Mule canon to see the next installment in the Wanna Be a Star? (Invincible Antichrist Victory!!!) other original, strange and funny short films. The Iron Mule Film Festivalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13260185868415169866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4015986223051664294.post-7442287687508830742012-07-11T07:59:00.000-04:002012-07-11T07:59:22.692-04:00Notes from our July 7th ScreeningA happy crowd of New Yorkers braved the July heat to pack

of what was going on in Jay and Victor’s lives. Victor
has two web series online right now: The Realm of Larp, and Funny Cause it’s True. Jay is finishing up tow
features with the promise of a trailer for one of them at next month’s show.

Joining Jay and Victor was guest judge Ben Roesch, a film
fan who Jay described as “a foremost Iron Mule expert.” Ben has been coming to Iron Mule
screenings since 2007 and has probably soon more short comedy films than your
average person. Who better to
judge than him?

The first film of the night came courtesy of our partner
organization, iThentic.com. We
screened an episode of their series Husbands, which tells the story of the
aftermath of two gay celebrities’ accidental marriage in Las Vegas.

Our first block of films in competition included Dave Green’s Ham Sandwich, a story of a man who discovers a magical sandwich that
sends him back in time with potentially disastrous consequences. Next was a short from UK animator Felix Massie, Keith Reynolds Can’t Make it Tonight. This film is sort of a stick-figure Mad Men gone deadly.

Felix wasn’t at the screening, so instead Jay and Victor
interviewed 92YTribeca intern Paolo Avenati as if he was Felix. They didn’t learn much, but they had
fun.

The next film in the lineup was Paolo Sasseneli’s
Uerra. Paolo is a famous TV and
film actor in Italy, and this was his first short. Beautifully shot (in 35mm! remember that?), Uerra is a
period film that tells the story of a group of people living in an apartment
building struggling with the aftermath of the Second World War. And it’s a comedy. Paolo couldn’t make it to New York, but
he sent a representative, his friend and fellow actor Laura Caparrotti, who was on hand to talk
about Paolo and his work and Italian shorts in general. Laura explained that the film was shot
in a very thick Italian dialect that few people outside of the region can
understand. (Naturally, our
audience couldn’t understand it either, but that’s why there were English
subtitles).

Two more films were up next: Chris Capel’s commercial spoof Naptime! in which we learned
about a product that will silence even the most annoying of children, and First Mate, from brother filmmaking team, Conor and Tyler Byrne. Conor and Tyler were at the show to
talk about their movie and what it’s like to makes movies with your brother (apparently there’s punching involved).

Our last film in competition was Stephen Neary’s Doctor Breakfast. We’ve shown some other
films by Stephen at past Iron Mules, but this one is really something
special. It’s about a guy whose
soul escapes and starts eating things and then some deer show up and try to
console the guy, and, well, it’s going to make absolutely no sense unless you
watch it. So take a look.

Then, while our vote counters were tabulating the audience
votes and our secret cabal was tabulating the judges’ votes, we premiered out
latest installment in the monthly “Wanna be a Star” series, Zombie
Barbeque. The film starred Aaron
Rudelson, who was randomly chosen at the June screening to star in his very own
film. It was written by Ryan
Guiterman and directed by Jovon Outlaw, and starred Aaron as a Zombie having
trouble getting people to attend his barbeque. Aaron happens to be an actor, so his performance (done
entirely in zombie language with English subtitles) was quite convincing.

Then it was time to announce the winners, and the audience
favorite went to First Mate and the judges award went to Keith Reynolds Can’t Make
it Tonight. But everyone was a winner as we moved on to the after party where drinks were had, jokes were cracked, and mingling was
done until it was late and people went back to their (hopefully
air-conditioned) homes.
Join us at 92YTribeca on August 4th for our next screening!
The Iron Mule Film Festivalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13260185868415169866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4015986223051664294.post-40525746780746430582012-06-25T18:47:00.001-04:002012-06-25T19:24:50.781-04:00Now That Everyone Has a HD Camera...A friend of ours forwarded an article from The Atlantic that puts into words a problem we've seen with submissions in the past few years.

Now that everyone has access to HD cameras with nice lenses, everything is starting to look really pretty.

It's becoming easier and easier to shoot something that automatically looks professional. But that doesn't mean that the quality of submissions is getting better. In fact, having the ability to make a film look professional without a lot of work has made filmmakers lazy. With an automatically slick-looking film, young filmmakers are more inclined to settle with that and focus less focus on storytelling, character development, acting, etc. When we started our festival back in 2002, we would often get submissions on VHS tape that had technical limitations, but we could see how the filmmaker really struggled with what he or she had to make the movie as tight and good as possible.

Now, we get movies shot with DSLR cameras that look really professional visually, but are 10 minutes longer than they should be.

And let's not assume that a camera that gives you good depth of field and wonderfully saturated colors means that you know how to light, compose shots or operate the dang thing. The camera makes it look like a real movie, but it doesn't make it good.

Director Doug Bayne (whose Factoids and Slapstick and Tiny Legs of Fire have played numerous times at the Iron Mule) puts it nicely in his Open Letter to Canon, posted below.

So don't rely on your camera to take care of everything. And if you have access to another format, think about trying that out every once in a while and see how it affects your storytelling. We'd LOVE to get a submission in Super 8.The Iron Mule Film Festivalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13260185868415169866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4015986223051664294.post-71777022211284554472012-05-06T13:59:00.000-04:002012-05-06T18:36:47.597-04:00Notes from our May 5th screeningWe officially launched our 10th year with a new lineup of films on May 5th.

Going back to our roots as a screening series designed to showcase our own work, the screening began with Botanical Gardens, a new music video by Jay Stern featuring a song by Dale Goodson and M. Sweeney Lawless. Following this, Victor presented a secret work-in-progress that we're not allowed to write about here. This is why you should really come to these screenings.

We began the competition with our iThentic.com selection, King Temp, written by Jason Saenz and Nick Turner and directed by Justin Tyler. This series tells the story of a man who makes the most out of his temp lifestyle, with helpful tips for you temps out there.

Next was Raymond C. Lai's wonderfully odd green-screen TV pilot At Your Convenience. At Your Convenience tells the story of two best friends who run a convenience store. In the pilot, one of them gets caught up in a gang, leading the other to enter the magical world of crack smokers. It's much funnier and more surprising than this description makes it sound, with really strong performances by the entire cast.

We began our next block of films with another King Temp episode, followed by Ryan Arey and David Valentine's Florida? which tests just how far you can go combining dark and cute in a 2-minute movie. Ryan directed the film and David designed the puppet. The three of them (Ryan, David, and the puppet) were at the screening and we spoke to them about their work and puppet-making in general.

The next film in the lineup was Professor Pebbles, Pierce Davidson's claymation film about a devil that can't do evil no matter how hard he tries, and our Australian addition to the evening. We closed this block with a final King Temp episode. Director Justin Tyler and producer Vincenzo Picciano were on hand and Jay and Victor interviewed them about this series and their other work.

As always at the Iron Mule, we ended the screening with our "Wanna Be a Star" film, stars an audience member from the previous month's screening with a title suggested by the audience.

Our star this month was Tom Carrozza, who happened to also play a lead role in our first ever "Wanna Be a Star" film that premiered 10 years ago this very month. So we had an encore screening of that film, Monkey Balls, followed by the new film The Zebra's Refrigerator. And just like old times, these were Jay and Victor films (Jay directed Monkey Balls and Victor directed The Zebra's Refrigerator.)

Tom Carrozza talks to Jay and Victor. Photo by Tom Henning.

Next it was time to announce the winners of the evening -- the audience favorite award went to Florida? while the judges prize went to At Your Convenience.

Then it was off to our award-winning after party that lasted until the wee hours of the evening. Join us at our June 2nd Iron Mule screening and experience the magic yourself!
